Give Your Heart A Break

She was crying to me on the phone again, but this time he really messed up. Maybe this time she’ll have the courage to leave him. My best friend Melissa’s boyfriend is the type every girl tries to avoid, but for some reason he stuck to her like glue. Everyday would be a new problem and everyday she would call me crying. Her sobbing was like stabs to my heart. “Sure, I’ll come over in a few minutes.”, I dreaded to hear her cry with so much agony, but all her complaining and yelling lead to them making up again. I hate him. With every inch of my heart.

We’ve lived next to each other for about 10 years now and as we grew, so did my feelings. I put my black and white varsity jacket on and tied my white Nike’s shoes and headed out the door. It was a sunny day in Bradford; birds were chirping and all the flowers were at the peak of their blooming. I walked across my lawn and headed towards hers. Before I could walk up the steps and knock on the door, I seen him come in his black BMW. I rolled my eyes at the sight of his face with sunglasses on.

“What are you doing here?”, I asked him.

“This is my girlfriends house. What are YOU doing here?”, he said with a stern expression.

“This is my best friends house. She’s angry at you and she doesn’t want to see you right now. So I suggest you just leave.” I swallowed my pride and looked him in the eyes.

“What are you going to do about it?”, next thing I knew we were up in each others faces. Creating fists in my hands, my blood rushing and my muscles tightening up.

“What are you doing here, Brian?”, Melissa rushed down the stairs and stood in front of me as if to protect me.

“I came to apologize baby. Please forgive me”, he said with a bouquet of red roses. “Please? Let me just make it all better again.”

“You always say that, but nothing ever changes!”, she said with her arms on her chest.

‘Yes…shes gonna break up with him…finally.’ I thought to myself.

“I promise it won’t happen again! You know I only love you, honey.”, he begged.

‘Hahahaha shes not gonna…’ “Ok fine one more chance.” ‘I knew it was too good to be true.’ I continued to think. She accepted his flowers and hugged him. He kissed her and like it always did, it killed me inside. I wished for her every kiss and touch. I loved her, yet she didn’t know. She never took the time to notice, but I was determined to make a change in that. There was only one problem….Brian!

Brian left and it was just me and her on her sitting on her long rocking chair on the porch. It was a lovely spring afternoon a beautiful warm breeze that could relax the most tense person. Birds were chirping and I seen a squirrel chasing after another one up the tree next to her porch. The screen door creaked a little as she came back with some lemonade for us to drink. She poured some in a glass with ice in it. There was evaporation forming on the cup as the heat of outside clashed with the ice cubes inside.

She handed it to me, “So, Zayn, How are you?”. What an irresistible smile she had. Dimple on her right cheek was visible every time she smirked.

“I’m fine, seems like you are too.”, I took a sip out of my drink.

“Yeah, I am.”, she smiled at me and took a sip too. Her smile was short of something though; happiness.

“But you do deserve better, you know?”, I looked at her waiting for her reaction.

She sighed and and tilted her head a little. “Zayn, I know I do, but I love him.”

Those words were like salt in an open wound. “I know you do, but why settle for less when you can have more?”, I said taking another sip.

“Why would you say that?”, she asked in an offended tone.

“He doesn’t deserve you. He treats you horribly and buys you things to make it seem like its ok, when its not; it never is. I just think that you need to open your eyes and see what’s really in front of you…”

“Oh really? What’s that Zayn?”, she chuckled a little twirling her cup playing around with the ice cubes.

“Someone who can keep you smiling, who will love you how you’re supposed to be loved, have tiny memories that can be remembered for a long time and just make you happy.”, her gaze lowered.

“It’s hard. It really is. I want to let go, but something keeps holding me back.”, she sighed.

“Can I tell you something?”, ‘This is it…tell her now.’ My conscience spoke to me.

“Sure, anything!”, she smiled at me.

“I…”, I was interrupted by her phone.

“Hold on…”, she took it out of her pocket, “Its my cousin Chelsea, I have to take this..”, she answered and I just set the cup down.

“I’ll just talk to you later, ok?”, I said. She nodded at me with the phone already in her ear and gave me a hug. I jumped over the wooden railings on her porch and headed towards my house until I heard my stomach growl. “I’m hungry…Nandos!!!!” I said to myself and started to walk my way there.

I could already smell the mouth watering chicken as I reached it. I held my stomach as it growled again. Something told me to turn my attention to the left of me. I had seen an extremely attractive girl in a leather jacket and dark skinny jeans with heels walk past by me and gave me a wink. I turned to look at her and seen her walk up to a tall guy with dark-hair. He had it slicked back and Ray Bans disguising his face. I squinted my eyes to see if I could get a better look as he removed them. She walked towards him and my eyes widened as he locked lips with her. I took my cell out as soon as I found out it was Brian. “Come on come on answer already!” I called her numerous amounts of times and still no answer. I couldn’t take it anymore so, I walked up to him.

He looked up at me and had a surprised expression, “Zayn? What are you doing here?” Without thinking I punched him in the face. He fell to the ground with his hand on his nose.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”, the girl told me.

“Who are you?”, I asked her holding my hand as the pain started to sting my knuckles.

“I’m his girlfriend…why did you do that?”, she said trying to help Brian up.

“You’re his girlfriend? Which number are you?”, I said calling Melissa again.

“What are you talking about?”, she dusted off Brian’s jacket. Brian grunted in pain.

“Meaning, he’s cheating on you.”, My hand began to throb because of the force of the impact to his face.

“You’re cheating on me?”. I heard a loud slap. Her voice faded as I walked towards the direction of my house again. My appetite had suddenly drifted away.

*Later on at 10pm*

Crickets were chirping, the trees were moving with the warm breeze and the moon lit up the night sky. I was eager to see Melissa more than usual. I couldn’t handle it so I walked out my house and planted a ladder next to her window. I climbed to the top and peeked through her open window, “Pssst, Melissa.” She got up and seen me, “Romeo Romeo. Where for art thou, Romeo?”, she said laughing. “Haha, let me in please? We need to talk.”, she opened her curtains and I climbed through.

She sat on her bed with her black and pink boy shorts and white tank top that hugged her bust in the right places. “What’s up Zayn?”, she said eating grapes. “Its about…”, she got up closer to me. “Zayn, I know…Liam told me.”, she sat down next to me. “You’re the most amazing person I know. You didn’t have to do anything. You could’ve just told me.” I looked up at her, “I couldn’t help it. Something in me just said ‘punch him’. I care about you a lot. Your happiness means the world to me. If you’re hurt, then I suffer too.” My gaze was towards the floor. She walked up to her bed and laid down again. “What would I do without you Zayn?”, she said yawning.

I smiled still looking at the red rug in the middle of her room, “I have to tell you something Melissa…” I looked up to see her sleeping. I got up towards her and sat in the chair next to her bed side. I covered her with her white blanket and tucked her in. I chuckled as she began to snore a little, “Why do you make me feel this way? You’re the only thing…only person I think about. Its not even the normal thinking either. I dream about you, day dream about you, everything reminds me of you. The smell of sweet pea and the smell of vanilla in your hair…” I touched her hair and moved it from her face. “Your beautiful hazel cat shaped eyes.”, I hadn’t noticed that I was getting emotional. The pain in my chest grew. “You throw your love to whomever came along, but fail to see who truly will hold it with them and keep it safe. I wish you could just look at me and…” I began to tear at the thought that she will never feel this way about me. “…tell me that you love me just as much as I love you. I know you’ve been hurt and you probably won’t give anyone another chance, but I’m waiting…” I sniffled and wiped my tears. “…even if it takes forever. I’m here to give your heart a break from all the pain, agony, misery and give you something more than just a simple rose or a teddy bear or some cheap box of chocolates. I wanna give you my heart, soul and love.” I kissed her forehead and whispered, “I love you, Melissa.” I squeezed my eyes shut as the remaining tears fell. I was in love with a girl who might never see me in that way. I wiped my tears and closed the light. I proceeded my way out the window tying to prevent any disturbance to her slumber.

I went up to my room and closed my door with my back facing it. I slid down trying to calm myself from overreacting. Attempting to sleep, but my feelings for her have sunk in so deep all I could dream of was her. I woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. “Ugh…” I ran my fingers through my hair. I grabbed for my jacket and opened my window. I climbed onto my roof to sit and think. It was serene until the silence was broken with the flick of my lighter. I pulled out a cigarette and took a puff. I tried to blow all of my feelings from my mind every night, but nothing worked. “Might as well just tell her…” I took another puff, “Nahh..”

*Next day*

Rain was falling heavily and the skies were filled with an enormous blanket of gray. Breeze still warm and I could hear cars hitting the puddles on the street in a distance. I grabbed for my umbrella and headed outside to meet up with Melissa. I seen her already waiting for me at her doorstep with her black high topped Nike’s, dark denim jean shorts and black PINK jumper. I studied her long legs, beautiful waist, long luscious brown hair flowing in the wind as she ran up to me avoiding the rain. “AHHHHH…MAKE ROOM UNDER THERE FOR ME!”, she huddled under it with me. “Shall we?”, she said as I nodded. We walked towards the park in the rain sharing an umbrella. This was the perfect atmosphere to tell her how I felt, but I was too much of a coward. ‘Suck it up Zayn and just tell her.’, my conscience was yelling at me. We reached the railing that overlooked a small lake. We stood there looking at the water move with the currents.

‘This is it. Tell her! TELL HER NOW!’, my conscience urged me to. I took a deep breathe, “Melissa…”.

She looked up at me with her hazel cat shaped eyes, “Yes.”

“I…I…” I hesitated as my nerves got the better of me. ‘SAY IT!’

“What is it Zayn? Spit it out.”, she was close to my face. ‘This is it Zayn tell her!’

“Isn’t it lovely weather?”, I chickened out. ‘Great going Mr. Romantic!’

She stepped into the pouring rain, “This is amazing.” She said with her arms open and head towards the sky.

“Melissa..”, I reached for her, but still nothing would come out.

“Zayn, are you ok?”, she came up to me her hair soaking wet and her clothes clung to her body as they were drenched.

“No…no…no I’m not actually.”, I said setting my umbrella down. ‘NOW THIS IS IT. VAS HAPPENIN FIRST KISS!?’ “There’s been something on my mind…no heart that I’ve been meaning to set free.”, I walked up to her with a demanding stare. I wanted her to know that I wanted her…that I loved her.

“Zayn?”, she said confusingly.

I pulled her close to me and she looked into my eyes with the most intensifying stare. I looked down at her and moved a strand of hair from her eyes. The rain was hitting down on us heavier, but we didn’t care. Her breathe was visible against the cool air. My jaw clenching as my the nerves in my stomach grew. ‘Kiss her Zayn’ I lifted her chin with my index finger and lightly pecked her on the lips. My eyes closed with satisfaction as our lips touched. It felt like a thousand shocks were set into my body. The little peck grew into a passionate kiss as she kissed me back with force. We pulled back gently, “I love you…Melissa.”

She looked into my eyes again and jumped on top of me, “I love you too, Zayn.” We locked lips again and stood there in the rain without a care in the world. Finally I had what I always wanted…her trust, mind, desires and most of all….her heart.
